- Confirm the thermostat is set to Cool and the requested temperature is below the room temperature.
- Look at the return-air filter without opening an equipment cabinet. Note whether it appears heavily loaded or collapsed.
- Check whether air is moving from the supply vents and whether the problem affects the entire home or one area.
- From a safe distance, note whether the outdoor unit is running and whether you see ice or unusual water.
- Record when the change started and whether the system has recovered and failed again.

Direct answers
Does a running outdoor unit mean the system is cooling correctly?
No. Operation alone does not confirm correct airflow, refrigerant performance, heat transfer, controls, or delivered capacity.
Should I keep lowering the thermostat?
Lowering the setting does not create additional cooling capacity. Record the room temperature and setpoint so the service team can see the actual gap.
